About this deal

The valves are replaceable. Replacement parts are available in online stores and in other audiovisual component stores. The design of this phono preamp is remarkable. The external frame has a bright finish that is versatile for old or new turntables. The controls, inputs, and outputs are firmly established. The operability is extraordinary. It delivers low signals to high amplification which makes the music broad and astounding.

Subsonic Filter:The Subsonic filter (-12dB/octave @ 20Hz) helps to reduce low-frequency rumble and wasted amplifier power. The Subsonic filter dip-switch is located on the bottom of the phono preamp. Most of the time when a tube is put in some audio product the result is a disaster. It is as if they think stuffing the tube in there is all they need to do, performance to be damned. Not here. The Pro-Ject Tube Box S2 seems to have been designed well to do what people expect a tube to do: produce a gradual rise in distortion with level. Sometimes the turntable, speakers, or amplifier produce low-frequency vibrations, which are also known by the name rumble. Gold-Plated RCA Connections:The Pro-Ject Box S is equipped with a pair of gold-plated RCA connections for the output stage and input stage. The gold-plate RCA connectors offer corrosion-free signal transfer. As a phono preamplifier, Pro-Ject Tube Box S Preamp sure does what it should. That said, the capabilities are limited, unlike other luxury preamps that can do more due to higher specs and added pieces.

Do you see it possible? Do you see that there could be a risk of damaging the ProJect ? If so, what would it be ? The casing of the Project Tube Box S has been designed to become an asset to the unit itself, as it remains sturdy enough to protect internal circuitry against interference and vibration, whilst still remaining aesthetically pleasing. Cages around the valves add that extra level of protection. A Project Connect IT E phono cable is included, providing a high quality shielded cable to connect the Tube Box S to your amplifier. Project Tube Box S Phono Stage Inc Project Connect IT E Phono Cable features Engaging the subsonic filter (also available via front panel pushbutton produces less low frequency rumble, but it also takes from a lot of the energy in the music resulting in an emotionally “flat” sound. Pro-Ject lists the filter as 20Hz with a slope of 18dB/octave however, the “20Hz” part confuses me because the filter doesn’t sound like it starts to drop at 20Hz. In fact, it sounds like it drops off at around 30-35Hz. Both come with two vacuum tubes of a common type ECC83 (12AX7). Those tubes are protected with housing in both preamps. The housing is pretty much similar on both preamps. In use, the Tubebox SE produces an impressively wide soundstage that makes full use of stereo imaging, and is nicely detailed. There's a real openness to the sound, too.

Maiden Voyage: Herbie’s piano sounded warm, inviting and timbrally rich. Soft, yet percussive, it flowed together perfectly with incredible sustain and life. I really could feel the emotion pouring through my system and out of my speakers like I have never before felt. “Yes!” I thought. “This is what analog really sounds like!” I have heard videos on YouTube of people playing their records through very nice equipment with good A/D conversion, and while very impressive sounding, the digital conversion mixed with YouTube’s compression and limited frequency range detracts from the presence and weight that with vinyl you can almost feel more than hear. Strange, right? Again, through the S2 there was a slight increase in depth and dimensionality compared to the Denon. Imaging was better, bass was cleaner, the S2 just is a better preamp. There's also a subsonic filter, which helps to eliminate rumble and other troublesome deep frequencies.
